Democrats Weigh Short-Term Debt Limit Increase

President Obama and Senate Democrats are weighing a scaled-back U.S. budget deal that would avert a looming default but force Congress to tackle the politically toxic issue again before the 2012 elections, a Senate Democratic aide told Reuters on Thursday.

The deal would cover the country's borrowing needs for seven months, the aide said. That would theoretically include budget savings of roughly $1 trillion to attract the Republican support needed to pass it through Congress.

Congress must raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Aug. 2 to avoid a default that could push the United States back into recession and send financial markets plummeting.

But there has been no progress toward an agreement since talks collapsed last week over tax increases Democrats want to include as part of a deficit-reduction package that would make it easier for lawmakers to sign off on further borrowing.

Democrats are currently weighing their options.

"We're working on a number of different proposals ... We discussed four of them with the president yesterday," Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid told reporters.

A seven-month extension is one of those options, the aide said. With the country borrowing roughly $150 billion per month, that would require a debt-limit hike of roughly $1 trillion. Negotiators had tentatively agreed on at least that amount of spending cuts before talks collapsed.

Other ideas include trying to reach a bigger deal that would extend U.S. borrowing authority through 2012, which would probably require more than $2 trillion in budget savings over 10 years.

Another option, the aide said, would include longer-term spending cuts totaling $4 trillion, which would reach the level that many economists say is needed to keep the national debt at a sustainable level.

Advancing a seven-month deal could expose divisions among Republicans.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell backed the idea of a short-term deal several weeks ago in order to get past the immediate crisis. The No. 2 Republican in the House, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, said shortly afterward that he had no appetite for that approach.

Democrats have stepped up their attack in recent days, challenging Republicans to defend tax breaks for corporate jets, race horses and yachts that benefit the wealthy. Democrats want to close $400 billion in tax breaks as part of the deal.

Democrats said they were awaiting a response from the top Republican in Washington, House Speaker John Boehner, over the general elements that would be possible in a deal.

(CNSNews.com) – Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner oversaw the largest increase in the national debt of any Treasury secretary in American history, presiding over a $3.7 trillion increase in the debt.
According to data from the Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Public Debt, the national debt has increased $3,723,575,990,130.10 from Jan. 26, 2009 until June 30, 2011, Geithner’s entire tenure to date as Treasury secretary.
When Geithner took office the total national debt stood at $10.6 trillion. As of June 30, 2011, it had risen to $14.3 trillion.
In fact, the debt accrued under Geithner is greater than all federal debt accrued in the first 204 years of the nation’s history. The national debt did not reach $3.7 trillion until October 1991, according to historical Treasury data that reaches back to 1791.
Geithner, who reportedly may step down from his position soon, has overseen the accrual of more federal debt (in only 2.5 years) than every Treasury secretary combined from Alexander Hamilton to Nicholas Brady, who was Treasury secretary in October 1991 when the national debt reached $3.7 trillion.
Since then, the federal debt has increased by historically large amounts under each Treasury secretary since Brady but not to the level it is today under Geithner. The debt increases under those secretaries are presented below.

Hollywood’s Fling with the Mob

Hollywood is home to some of the biggest movie production companies, directors, actors and actresses. Today Hollywood is the word used for the glamorous multibillion dollar US film industry. It is also home to some of the world biggest names in the entertainment industry and a place that most up and comers aspire to be on day. How could Hollywood ever be linked with the Mob? On the surface Hollywood would seem to be worlds apart from the murderers, extortionist, and gangsters in the Mob. But on closer inspection you can see that the film industry and the mob are very similar indeed.

Many of the Hollywood stars and moguls often originated from the same place as the gangsters, in that they were immigrants from Europe or sons of immigrants. For instance, the Warner brothers were sons of a Polish cobbler while the Cohn brothers were sons of a German tailor. And Frank Sinatra’s grandfather lived in the same village as Lucky Luciano.
With the film industry being so successful in Hollywood, of course the mafia would be attracted to it and the huge potential for financial gain. The need for huge amounts of cash to create a movie meant that this was perfect for laundering money unlike other forms of “fronting” such as a manufacturing business which take a bit of time to set up before they can start washing money. So the mafia would be naturally attracted to such an opportunity. It would be simple enough for the mafia to move into the film industry.
Bankers were always reluctant to lend the huge sums required to make a film because they saw the film industry a volatile and unable to produce a consistent return on investment, but the gangsters who already controlled the film industry unions were prepared to take a greater risk for bigger reward. Control of the unions gave the mob greater leverage over the film industry. Although the big movie producers were all too happy to jump into bed with the mob because it afforded them more financial freedom.
Film historian David Thomson once said that the Hollywood mogul’s in the Golden Age (1920s to late 1950s) often behaved like gangsters, which was probably largely down to their very close relationship with the mob. MGM boss Louis B. Mayer was good friends with gangster –turned-agent Frank Orsatti, while Chicago mobster Johnny Rosselli was so close to Columbia studios boss Harry Cohn that they wore identical rings.
Writer Raymond Chandler who also wrote many screen plays for Hollywood producers once wrote to a friend after noticing the similiarities between the Hollywood executives and the Mafiosi. He wrote:
"Once looking out of Joe Sistrom’s window on the (Universal) lot, I happened to see the big boys strolling back from lunch in the exec dining room in a loose group. I was transfixed with a sinister delight. They looked exactly like a bunch of topflight Chicago gangsters moving in to read the death sentence on a beaten competitor. It brought home to me in a flash the strange psychological and spiritual kinship between the operations of big money business and the rackets. Same faces, same expressions, same manners. Same way of dressing and same exaggerated leisure of movement."

The mafia has intimidated actors and producers with threats and violence since the 1930s, extorting the studios for up to $1.5 million a year, which would be the equivalent of $14 million in today’s times. The mafia is reportedly still at it these days although there are now huge barriers to get over to gain entry into the movie business. Most of their business can only be done at lower levels now and on a smaller scale. It was reported that as recently as 7 years ago members of the Gambino crime family were imprisoned for threatening and trying to extort the actor Steve Seagal.
I am sure that the relationship between Hollywood and the Mob was/is not just for financial reason. The moguls of Hollywood loved to rub shoulders with the high flying gangsters because it added that certain power that they craved, and for the gangsters, having a friend or friends who was successful in the movie business would bring a lot of prestige and street cred.

Man grabs French president before being tackled by security

 

CNN) -- A man grabbed French President Nicolas Sarkozy by his shoulder and pulled him up against a barricade Thursday before being tackled by security officers.

The incident came as Sarkozy visited the town of Brax in southwest France.
Television footage showed the man being wrestled to the ground by four bodyguards.
The suspect, who is 32 and works at a local music school, was taken into custody and questioned by police who were already present for security reasons, a police spokesman said. He is now being held at Agen police station, the spokesman added.
Sarkozy appeared to have been seized by the shoulder of his jacket as he shook hands with members of the public lined up behind a metal security barrier in the town, near Agen.
The president was due to attend a meeting of local mayors during his visit to the Lot-et-Garonne region, according to local media reports. Earlier, he was to tour a local factory.

Andy Murray's bid to become the first British man to reach the men's singles final at Wimbledon since 1938 faces the ultimate challenge - a semi-final on Friday against defending champion Rafael Nadal.
Murray has barely been tested so far, but knows he is going to have to play at his very best to beat the 10-time Grand Slam winner.
The Scot has managed only four wins in 15 encounters with Nadal and lost in straight sets to the Spaniard at this stage last year, and again recently in the French Open semi-finals.
BBC tennis experts Tim Henman, John McEnroe and Greg Rusedski give their tactical analysis on how he can beat Nadal, and Andy Murray himself outlines his plan of attack.

TRY TO GET UNDER HIS SKIN - JOHN MCENROE

"Murray has beaten him on four different occasions, including the US Open semi-final.
"I would make sure the umpire is aware of the rules on time-delay warnings. Nadal seems to take his time often, so try to get under his skin. He's got a routine, Murray should say 'I'm not accepting this'.

Murray's Wimbledon highs and lows

"I would try to cut off Nadal's wide serve. Then when Murray is serving I would say that instead of going big and hitting 50% of his first serves in by going flat-out, he should take a little off so that he doesn't have to have as many second serves, which Nadal can pounce upon."

ANDY HAS GOT TO BE PROACTIVE - TIM HENMAN

"Strategy is very important. If he plays too cautiously then I think Nadal is just so good from the back of the court - he hits the ball so hard.
"Andy's got to try and make things happen, but he's beaten Nadal before and I definitely think he can win on Friday.
"It is so difficult to pick a weakness in Rafa's game, but I would say it is his backhand return at the deuce box. I think that is where I would like to see Andy using a slower serve out wide and maybe sneaking in to serve and volley a bit, as I think he can win some cheap points.
"It's an option Juan Martin del Potro exploited in his fourth-round match with Nadal and it is something for Andy to look out for.

"His second serve percentage of 65% against Feliciano Lopez was good, but it's flattering because Lopez doesn't really have the baseline game of Nadal.
"He has still got to be aggressive on his second serves as he doesn't want to let Nadal dominate. It's about him getting this balance right. He has to be proactive and look to be aggressive.
"I would like to see him increase his percentage of first serves in to more than 60%, but while still making sure he is winning 85% of first serve points, as he did against Lopez.
"That would be a great combination and the sort of numbers he will need to achieve against Nadal.
"It means he should hold his serve comfortably and then he can put more pressure on the return game because he can be even more aggressive."

BE AGGRESSIVE ON THE SECOND SERVE - GREG RUSEDSKI

"The problem that Andy has with playing Nadal is that Rafa always brings out his best tennis from the semi-finals onwards.
"Murray is going to have to play the match of his life.
"We all thought he had a good chance last year because Nadal went through a struggle against Philipp Petzschner in the early rounds, but Nadal stepped it up - he really knows what he needs to do against the big guys.
"Rafa hasn't served brilliantly throughout the championship so I think it is important for Andy to step in and be aggressive like he was when he beat him at the US Open in 2008. He really took it to Rafa that day, and if he is going to win he has got to get the balance just right.

"Crucial to this is how aggressive Andy is on his second serve. It was really punished against Ivan Ljubicic, so expect Rafa to get in there and give it a good whack.
"He cannot give Rafa the chance to dictate rallies by hitting the ball where he wants it, as Andy will be in trouble and constantly running from left to right.
"He needs to serve out wide to open up points, which will give him the chance to take control. He has got to get the mixture just right between being aggressive and going for all out attack.
"It will be intriguing to see how the crowds react on Centre Court as Rafa has so many fans out there, like we saw in last year's semi-final.
"Andy has to use the crowd to his advantage, but it is also hard for people to clap against Rafa as he is such a wonderful gentleman and champion."

"Some people think you have to blast through Rafa and go for everything, but you have to be patient.
"If you watch how world number two Novak Djokovic played when he beat Rafa on the clay in the Madrid Masters and Rome Masters last month he was very solid, didn't take huge risks, but hit the ball with a lot of authority.
"You can't just leave the ball in the middle of the court against Rafa, but at the same time trying to hit winners off the first shot of the rally just doesn't work.

Sharapova amazed to back in final

Maria Sharapova recovered from a dreadful start to beat Sabine Lisicki and reach her first Wimbledon final since she won the title in 2004.

The fifth-seeded Russian will play Petra Kvitova on Saturday after winning 6-4 6-3 in an hour and 26 minutes.
A rash of errors left Sharapova 0-3 down but she took nine of the next 10 games against the German wildcard.
Both players struggled on serve, with Sharapova hitting 13 double-faults, but some big groundstrokes saw her through.
Sharapova, who has fought back from a serious shoulder injury that threatened to end her career, is into her first Grand Slam final since the 2008 Australian Open and will be favourite to triumph against Kvitova.
But she was fortunate that 21-year-old Lisicki crumbled and was unable to produce the kind of tennis that had made her the surprise package of this year's tournament.

"I haven't gone past the fourth round here for a few years, but I still feel I have more to do. Kvitova is a great player on grass and is playing really good tennis - it'll be a tough match, but I'm looking forward to it."

NBA lockout looms as sides fail to reach deal

Despite a three-hour meeting Thursday and a final proposal from the players, the sides could not close the enormous gap that remained in their positions.
“The gap is too great,” Hunter said.
The CBA expires at midnight, after which all league business is officially on hold, starting with the free agency period that would have opened Friday.
Commissioner David Stern said “with some sadness” he would recommend later Thursday to the labor relations committee that the first lockout since the 1998-99 season be imposed.
“Needless to say we’re disappointed that this is where we find ourselves,” Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said.
Hunter said he hopes the two sides will meet again in the next two weeks.
The last lockout reduced the 1998-99 season to just a 50-game schedule, the only time the NBA missed games for a work stoppage. Hunter said it’s too early to be concerned about that.
“I hope it doesn’t come down to that. Obviously, the clock is now running with regard to whether or not there will or will be a loss of games, and so I’m hoping that over the next month or so that there will be sort of a softening on their side and maybe we have to soften our position as well.”
The players’ association seems unlikely, at least for now, to follow the NFLPA’s model by decertifying and taking the battle into the court system, instead choosing to continue negotiations. Hunter said last week he felt owners believe the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis, which is debating the legality of the NFL’s lockout, will uphold employers’ rights to impose lockouts.
The NBA’s summer league in Las Vegas already has been canceled, preseason games in Europe were never scheduled, and players might have to decide if they want to risk playing in this summer’s Olympic qualifying tournaments without the NBA’s help in securing insurance in case of injury.
Training camps usually open the last week of September and the regular season about a month later.

White House snubs McConnell invitation to Obama

(Reuters) - The White House effectively turned down an invitation by Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell for President Barack Obama to visit his members on Capitol Hill on Thursday to discuss raising the debt limit.
White House press secretary Jay Carney, while not directly saying the invitation had been rejected, said Obama did not need to hear Republicans tell him what they would not support.
That, Carney said, was "not a conversation worth having."

A day after President Obama persuaded senators to cancel their Independence Day vacation to make headway on debt negotiations, the chamber’s Republican leader said there’s no better time to get started than right now — and he urged Mr. Obama to come to the Capitol immediately to talk.
“That way he can hear directly from Republicans why what he’s proposing won’t pass. And we can start talking about what’s actually possible,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, said.
It’s the latest escalation in a war of words between Congress and the White House over the looming Aug. 2 deadline for raising the government’s debt limit.
Earlier in the day, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, announced next week’s planned Independence Day break won’t happen.
“We’ll do that because we have work to do,” he said, adding that the Senate will have a vote on July 5, though he didn’t say what the subject would be.

The chamber still will take off on Monday — July Fourth — but will be back in town on Tuesday, and it could even face a debate on a constitutional amendment to balance the budget next week.
At his press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Obama expressed frustration with his former congressional colleagues, who have been away from Washington repeatedly over the past month and who have hit a stalemate on negotiations to raise the government’s debt ceiling, which will be hit on Aug. 2.
“They’re in one week, they’re out one week, and then they’re saying, ‘Obama’s got to step in — you need to be here?’ I’ve been here,” he said. “You stay here. Let’s get it done.”
Senate Republicans also had threatened to block a vacation, saying the chamber should be in town working on the issue, and on Thursday morning Mr. Reid said that’s just what will happen.
The House is taking its Independence Day vacation this week and is scheduled to be back in town next week.

Rubio Blasts Obama: ‘Left-Wing Strong Man’

Earlier this month, Sen. Marco Rubio made an auspicious debut.
Unlike so many first turns in the upper chamber, Rubio’s stirring remarks, which celebrated American exceptionalism, caught fire. The Florida Republican’s words were cited by Senate colleagues and championed by conservatives. To no one’s surprise, the push to put Rubio on the 2012 ticket only increased, even though the charismatic freshman continues to swat away the chatter.
Look for the Rubio buzz to continue. In an interview with National Review Online, he says that he will take to the Senate floor for his second speech this week — and this time he will have President Obama in his crosshairs.
Rubio tells us that he will respond to Obama’s recent press conference, where the president reveled in class-warfare bluster. “Quite frankly, I am both disappointed for our country and shocked at some of the rhetoric,” he says. “It was rhetoric, I thought, that was more appropriate for some left-wing strong man than for the president of the United States.”
“Talking about corporate jets and oil companies,” Rubio says, missed the point. “Everybody here agrees that our tax code is broken,” he says, and he is open to discussing tax reform. “But don’t go around telling people that the reason you are not doing well is because some rich guy is in a corporate jet or some oil company is making too much money.”
Watching Obama brandish such talking points made Rubio wince. “Three years into his presidency, he is a failed president,” he says. “He just has not done a good job. Life in America today, by every measure, is worse than it was when he took over.”

Beneath the Dune by Walter Ramsay

I totally enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.
The story takes place in central FL and the main character, Tucker Lee Anderson, is a sports writer for a local newspaper. He is asked to investigate, when a colleague is sick, the finding of a child’s bones in a sand dune. You then learn some of the history of the Seminole Indians whom originally settled the area. We then begin to learn the extent of how a cover up was started more than a 100 years ago. It continues to the present time and turns extremely dangerous. Tyler’s childhood friend Craig, a detective, agrees with Tyler that something is very wrong and the finding of the bones, for some reason is being covered up. Craig, Tucker’s boss, although he is threatened along with Tyler, eventually realizes that the newspaper has to help with the investigation.
P.S. Sometimes books take 4 pages to explain something that amounts to one sentence. This book was the exact opposite which, with the story, was a delightful experience.
